However, Dr. Hinton told the BBC that “in the shorter term” he believed that risks from AI would be greatly outweighed by benefits. “So I don’t think we should stop developing this stuff,” he added.
He added that it would be challenging to take a break due to worldwide competitiveness. Even if everyone in the US stopped working on it, China would still have a significant advantage, he claimed.
Dr. Hinton said that he was a scientist, not a politician, and that it was the government’s job to make sure AI was built “with a lot of thought into how to stop it going rogue.”
